The lab Bunsen burner is to be used when heating a substance in a beaker or crucible, supported on a ringstand by means of a wire gauze or clay triangle.

Procedure for properly using a lab burner:

burner1.gif (952 bytes)CAUTIONburner2.gif (952 bytes): Chemical compounds can be dangerous if not handled properly, especially if it is unknown. BE SURE to understand how to SAFELY HANDLE CHEMICAL COMPOUNDS

**NOTE: MAKE SURE THE LAB PROCEDURE IS PROPERLY UNDERSTOOD and BE SURE TO READ ABOUT FIRE SAFETY

1) Turn on main gas burner1.gif (952 bytes)CAUTIONburner2.gif (952 bytes): Make SURE all gas valves are closed, before turning on the main gas.

2) Put safety goggles on

3) Obtain a lab burner from the laboratory drawer

4) Connect rubber hose to the lab burner and gas valve, checking for holes or cracks in the rubber

5) Obtain sparker from the laboratory cabinet

6) Adjust the flame's heat, by turning the air valve on the burner tube

7) Turn the gas valve on

8) Hold sparker over the top of the burner, and squeeze the handle until the flame is lit

9) Place burner under beaker or crucible to be heated, making sure both the burner and ringstand setup are secured

**NOTE** Be sure to read about the proper use of a Laboratory Crucible

Adjusting the Air Mixture Valve:

1) Estimate the temperature the substance must be heated at, according to the procedure

- to make the flame burn hotter and larger, open the air mixture valve accordingly

- to make the flame burn cooler and smaller, close the air mixture valve accordingly

burner13.gif (1761 bytes) This is and example of a well-adjusted burner flame

burner14.gif (1567 bytes)And this is an example of poorly adjusted burner flame

After Use:

1) Remove burner from under the ringstand **NOTE: FOR SAFETY, DO NOT REMOVE GOGGLES UNTIL THE FLAME IS OFF

2) Turn gas valve off

3) Remove rubber tube from gas nozzle

4) Place burner back into laboratory facility properly

5) Proceed with the rest of the experiment
